Performance: Sonics: |
As a long time lover of John Coltrane I was very familiar with the drumming of Elvin Jones but had not heard his album "Dear John C." till only last year when I purchased the Analogue Productions re-release of this 1965 jazz treat on SACD. This jazz quartet features Charlie Mariano on alto sax, Richard Davis on bass, Roland Hanna on piano (tracks 1-3), Hank Jones playing piano (tracks 7-10), with Elvin Jones of course as leader on drums. This album is just a little gem....... If you crank this SACD you will swear these guys are jamming in your living room (or music room if you are as lucky!). I have not heard the original to compare this SACD transfer to, but can only tell you that sonically it is pretty amazing. Jones' drums are nice clear and sound far to the left side while Mariano's sax blows straight at you on the far right. The piano is center stage with the bass filling in all around. This dense wall of jazz sound is simply awesome and when you hear "Song Bird" come storming in or the soft and soulful "feeling good" you will be glued to your stereo ........guaranteed. The instruments sound very real and alive on this SACD.
