Performance:   Sonics:
Straight forward this recording lacks the bite and energy that is required of the 5th the rondo left me unmoved; but the 4th movement is beatifuly performed I was brought to tears by how moving Gergiev's vision of the love song is; its rare that it's performed as a song of passion and love rather than the funeral piece that bernstien falsly branded it. I alone would buy the recording by how well the adagietto is performed. (of course this me not all who will read this.)
But on the downside all other movements are misfired in thier approach.
The sonics are more unbalanced than usual from the ussually rich LSO live label.
the stereo crams together the orchestra not a whole lot of detail is heard even in the 5.1. How ever the 4th movement in its smaller choice of orchestration is wondeful in its detail and range. In the other movments The treble and alto instruments lack a rich color and timbre while all bass instruments are really well heard and perhaps even over powered the bass response is heavy (my house shook as the timpani's crashed in the opening.)
It seems the only light side to this recording is the 4th movement I myself have never cared much for the 5th
Only the adagietto and opening trumpet solo interest me however for anyone who does fancy this piece there is much better hybrid SA-CD Recordings available...overall this is more bad than it is good.

Don't waste your money, this is horrible! This is recorded during Valery Gergiev's Mahler project with London Symphony Orchestra and loses its brilliance for poor engineering.
I thought that the performance would be excellent according Maestro Gergiev's previous recordings.

First movement, Funeral March, is very good in its own way. Solo trumpet's famous fanfare isn't very impressive here. Although there are many pretty good things the overall interpretation isn't good.
Second movement is better. Gergiev reaches its violent feeling. In third movement the quiet trios (pizzicato parts) and principal horn's lonely melodies are excellent. Music fades almost to the silence until it goes further. Exciting effect!
And now, the famous Adagietto. Its total time - 9 minutes - is faster than Bernstein's (nearly 13 minutes - the late recording for Deutsche Grammophon) but slower than Haenchen's (8 minutes). I think that this movement is this disc's the greatest pleasure - it proves that even Gergiev is sometimes a good Mahlerian - this is my opinion.
In the finale LSO can show its virtuosity. It is a pity that audience's applause is deleted - by the way I wasn't in the concert.

The multi-channel (5.1) mix is the worst that I've ever heard! It is muddy, distant and unclear. I cannot recommend this disc, then. Stereo mixing is better.
If you want a real good recording of Mahler's Fifth, I recommend Helmut Haenchen's live performances (PentaTone). It is much better than this.
