| Let's put it this way: Of all the Esoteric SACD reissues, this is the one disc which, if I lost, I would not be too compelled to replace. Part of this is purely personal. I have never quite gotten comfortable with Kleiber's conducting or any of Schubert symphonies, irrespective of who the conductor might be. Moreover, the sound quality is less impressive than the dozen or Esoteric discs I have. Not awful, just less impressive. It still betters most low/mid price RBCD issues by leaps and bounds. What it does right is in having an excellent volumetric sense of space like Esoteric's other discs and the good instrumental separation and deep bass. But it ultimately lacks the frequency extension and sparkle of the Decca discs and the timberal honesty and air of the EMI discs in the Esoteric reissue program. Which is to say that its sonic character is typical DG fare. The highs are not edgy per se but can get slightly congested at times; the bass is deep and warm but never firm or quick; etc. If you're already familiar with the recording and simply want the best sound possible in an updated package, this disc may be perfect for you. But if your interest is more pedestrian and mostly you are just looking for sonic spectaculars, there are better options out there.
