Why did they do it? Of the many many possible contenders for a new SACD transfer this seems a very strange choice. Maybe a favourite of a decision maker in Universal Japan?

Listening to this I thought of much better music of the same period - Robert Wyatt, Colosseum, Yes, Gryphon, Jethro Tull, ... - that IMO is more worthy of an SACD transfer.

Having said that the transfer is good.

Will I listen to it again? Maybe, maybe not.

Hi everyone,

I want just to give a different view about this record...

Gentle Giant is one of the most acclaimed prog bands of the 70's, and probably one of those which worth the listening 40 years later...

Octopus is probably the best album from Gentle Giant and I can understand why the SACD is important : the sound of Octopus with the vocal harmonies and subtle arrangments worth the delicate sound of SACD.

Just have a look on Octopus's rating on Progarchives : http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=616

4.20/5 with 516 notes... this is close to the best Genesis ratings !

This is a brilliant SACD. Not only is this one of Prog. rocks masterpieces but they did a nice mastering job on it. Gentle Giant are not as easy to swallow as Yes or Genesis but are a band worth checking out. Their music (in my case anyway) took a while to grow on you. I am very happy I picked this up (even with it's $80 price tag). It's an all time classic record and finally we have an SACD worthy of it's music. I had the last two CD remasters and neither are close to the sound we get here!

One would like to ask John: but on what you're listening to this CD? Recording with an abundance of air, impressive bass, vivid and emotional vocals. Very good separation of instruments. Universal get the most out of the master tape.
