First, the sonics are generally very good, if somewhat sonorous in places, and on its own terms the performance quite enjoyable. It has been described as granitic and big-boned and I would agree with that. While the tempos are indeed slowish, there is no lack of tension, and the performance is never less than involving. Recommended.
Rob Cowan's review in the March Gramophone contrasts somewhat sharply with Polly Nomial's review above, both as to the overall quality of the performance and the sonic emphasis. According to Cowan the finale goes out in a blaze of string-dominated glory, whereas above concludes it is the brass to the fore in the finale. I suppose one could argue that the sonics are so poor that one cannot tell the difference between the strings and the brass, but I don't think that is the case.
