Reviews: Gayageum Sanzo - SongJa Chee

Performance:   Sonics:
Gayageum is a table harp-like instrument that resembles Japanese koto (both derive from Chinese guzheng). Gayageum has 12 strings.

The Sanzo music exists in dimension different from Western music.
In that it is similar to Japanese gagaku which is more widely known in the West today.

Here, every single note is unique in its sound, important and meaningful. The Sanzo music seems to be generally slow but it's not like minimalistic music (Glass a.o.) where similar notes are repeated. Sanzo gives listener enough time to feel the special meaning of each note.

It doesn't sound silky-smooth as new age styled world music. Some parts are on the harsh side.

Listening requires certain open-mindness, but is rewarding.

The album presents a duo of a gayageum (SongJa Chee) and a drum.

Sound appears very natural and convincing though I confess I've never heard the instruments alive.

Highly recommended.
