a REVIEW OF THIS SACD POSES QUITE A PROBLEM.
If the orignal recording is not quite at the top level but the transfer is good enough to reveal this and is an accurate copy of the original tapes...how do you rate the sound quality??
THE RECORDING IS NOT THE BEST. bY THIS i MEAN THAT THERE IS NONE OF THE GREAT INSTUMENTAL/VOICE SEPERATION OF THE VERY BEST RECORDINGS..BUT HAVING SAID THAT.........THIS IS A DECENT SOUNDING SACD.
While some tracks sound veiled and a tad stuffy....others sound quite good. Also the more I played this sacd, the better it sounded. SHM-SACD'S need to be broken in.
The first thing I noticed on this import sacd was the quality of Winwood's voice which is actually very nice on most tracks. I was surprised by how round and solid it felt.
The 2nd track.....cant find my way home...my favourite Blind Faith song sounds very worn and flat which is sad to say.
The best track.by far..... is the last on (DO WHAT YOU WANT) which is almost 16 minutes of great jam which includes a very good clapton guitar solo and a very long Baker drum solo which sounds awesome. Clearly the best track by far.
I would recommend this as it is a classic album and it does sport decent sonics overall with several tracks that stand out very well. If you like this album get it as you wont find better sound. But being honest with you.it is not a 5 star transfer because of the tape quality and the actual recording process.

What?
This SACD achieves the impossible. It is warm, detailed, dynamic. It's easily the most amazing sounding album of all of the SHM-SACDs I have bought.
I cannot rate this highly enough. There are some great sounding Tom Toms on this recording.
I never owned this album previously and I LOVE it.

| I'm really satisfied with the soundquality as well. They did a great job in my opinion. Great to hear a bunch of legendary musicians playing (and having fun) together (with so much detail). This is the kind of musicianship that nowadays bands make sound average and uninspired. Let's hope Universal Japan will have more "surprises" in their magic hat. Great to see they don't only release "obvious stuff" as Rolling Stones and Steely Dan, but also Blind Faith, Caravan, Fairport Convention, Gentle Giant, Wishbone Ash,... Essential disc for rockfans, and surely the "definitive version" to get for audiophiles. Those shm-sacd's aren't cheap, but worth the money!

Completing today's trifecta of DSD transfers by Hitoshi Takiguchi at Universal Mastering Studios, Tokyo, Japan - The sound quality here is as good as the master tape, which is admittedly not "hi-fi" at all times. The hiss on this SHM-SA-CD is glorious, as it lets you know that nothing is being hidden by compression / other tricks of mastering. Yep, "stereo only", as are all Universal Japan SHM-SA-CD's.
40 years hence, I can say that I think the writing on this album is superlative, with even a good sense of what cover versions to do (the Buddy Holly song). I read one of the other reviews where the drum sound was mentioned - yeah! "Do What You Like" sounds amazing, Jimmy Miller must've really known how to record Ginger Baker.
Too bad they didn't offer a choice of covers - the US non-offensive Atco cover or the Polydor UK cover (the one they used).
$50+ to hear this album sound the best it can? - Here's my money. Thank you for making this exist, Hitoshi Takiguchi!

I never could understand why this and Layla were recorded so poorly. I know there were a lot of ego's involved and Clapton would be at his worst as far as his drug problem was concerned but somehow they pulled off a great record. Closer to Traffic then Creem but fans of either should like this.
The reason I am giving the sound 41/2 stars is because of the mastering job they did. This should be a three and a half to four because it is recorded so poorly but whoever mastered this went above the call of duty. Well Done!!!
