Reviews: Miles Davis: Jazz at the Plaza

Performance:   Sonics:
The US SACD of "Jazz At The Plaza" provides the listener with an intimate live performance of Miles with Coltrane. Great SACD but doesn't come close when compared with the JSACDs of Miles At The Blackhawk. This SACD is highly recommended, but the sonics of the recent CD (also on the Miles/Coltrane Columbia box as Disc 6) are very close. This SACD is high on the priority of a great live Miles disc on its own, however. Interesting to hear Miles blow off mic during "If I Were A Bell" while Coltrane follows with brilliant phrasing.

Performance:   Sonics:
This is a great snapshot of one of the seminal jazz groups in history (hard to avoid cliche in this particular instance). A must have for Miles fans. A note about the sonics. Carefully prepared recordings from this era, like the RCA Living Stereo series, hold up to modern scrutiny quite well. This disc, however, is not one to use to showcase SACD to those unfamiliar with the format. The sonic flavour is one of almost bootleg quality (though a high-grade bootleg). If you already have the CD of this, I can't say it's worth upgrading to SACD, but as I didn't have any version of this, the SACD was worthwhile to me. I gave it 2 1/2 stars in sonic quality, only as it compares to the RCA series. Without those venerable recordings to compare it with, I'd probably give it a three or three and a half. As for the performance, I only gave it five stars because the system won't let me give more.

Recommended for anyone who doesn't already have it (as one should always try for the highest available fidelity), but not as a must "upgrade".

stereo sonics: besides the problems with the level control at the beginning, the sound is ok for a 58 live recording

Beware this disc!!! Do not buy this thinking you will have something that sounds at least good. The sonics on this disc are TERRIBLE, especially when considering the sound of most of the contemporary Davis CBS recordings. David starts out way too loud in the tonsils of the microphone for the right channel, then recedes into the distance.

The playing of the group is wonderful, but the piano is terribly out of tune and sounds like the typical tin-can piano in most night clubs.

This is one of the worst live recordings I have ever heard, but the performances deserve to be heard, even if the sound is awful. The whole band sounds as if they had been recorded from another room.

So, let the buyer beware!!!

To recap: phenomenal playing, Terrible recording. Historic live sets.

Yes, there are volume problems at the start of this recording but keep the volume at normal level until Miles steps back from the microphone, then turn your volume up to a higher than usual level and everything sounds fine.

It's an atmospheric recording which I'm enjoying very much lately. The personnel are top-notch and I really think this disc is judged too harshly by others. It's great fun to listen to and I'd recommend it to Miles fans and fans of live Jazz in general.
