I'm not sure what equipment the other reviewer is listening on, but I found this to be technically just awful as a recording - oppressively close, airless, thick, muddled and completely stage-less. It's actually one of the worst sounding classical SACDs (of around 400) I have heard. This has absolutely nothing to do with an orchestra playing in a real acoustic space. You have been warned.

It's impossible for me to fully rate the performances, therefore, because I simply couldn't sit through the recording without wanting to do something else. But I would agree the Pulcinalla is good and the symphony so-so.

Avoid.

The performances of Stravinsky’s work by Pierre Boulez should be well known by now. Integrity, never over the top and the tempi always feel natural. As if this music need to be performed no other way. On this recording Boulez was very lucky with the soloists, Roxana Constantinescu and Kyle Ketelsen, who both give a very convincing performance of their respective parts of the score of Pulcinella.

Having been at the symphony Center about three times I remember overwhelming copper and overwhelming or disturbing low end so now and then. On this recording I found the copper reasonably-trimmed but low end, especially in the symphony in three pieces was sometimes too much to my liking. On the other hand, a recording may very well expose the short comings of a symphony hall.

The acoustical problems did not reduce the joy of the listening session though. A fully entertaining performance and recording.
