Reviews: Dexter Gordon: Go

This excellent reissue from Analogue Productions gives us everything good (and not-so-good) about the 'Blue Note Sound.' The SACD is very convincing, in that it's recreating the original master tape. Gordon's sax is hard-panned left, so while his tone is recreated beautifully it doesn't quite come across as natural - by itself, it seems like a mono recording sent only to the left channel. Higgins' drums fare better, still hard-panned right but with a bit more sense of space around them. Warren's bass is consistently distant in the mix, but the string bass sound is very clean and accurate, although it does seem to roam between center and right in the stereo image from one track to the next. Sonny Clark's piano is well-balanced and dead center in all tracks, although a bit thin sounding - a common fault in recordings of this vintage.

So this disc does not give me the impression of being right in the Van Gelder studio with the musicians, but it could convince me that I'm in the control room... and what fan of jazz would have passed up that opportunity?
