| Coming off the heals of 2 excellent James Taylor releases, Sony struck out with "October Road". Being the newest recording by James Taylor, I expected this to easily beat or at least match the excellence of both "Hourglass" and "JT". However, this disc is not even close. The sonics are very poor and the multi-channel mix is more iritating than enlightening. Some wierd crackle noises come out of the rear speakers on several tracks, most noticable on "September Grass". Another disapointment is the lack of the extra tracks that were present on the Redbook Limited edition version. It appears that Sony just rushed it out the door and it shows. When I tried to ask Sony about the problems with this disc, I received no response.

When people start to complain before the even tried to find out what the problem is, you get a review like the one from emilsjr. The 'weird crackling noises'like he calls them are percussion sounds also present in the stereo mix. It has nothing to do with a deffective disc or a botched surround mix. It is true, it is unusual, but to me that makes it interesting. You have little things you suddenly find highlighted, you might overhear in the stereo mix (which I have not rated since I did not listen to it very often) Overall, on my system, I cannot hear any flaws in the sound compared to Hourglass (but I have not listened to them directly after each other, October Road is in my second flat right now). In fact, I enjoyed October Road so much, I went and bought me Hourglass.
Given the fact, that it does seem a little unusual to just put a sort od dribbling sound on the rear speakers, you could suspect, that this disc was rushed, but sorry, I do not feel that way. I like it and It surely does not deserve just one star. It has a relaxed sound, space, great songs, all that you wish from a James Taylor release.
As a conclusion, If you do not like experiments (even little ones like on here) you might not enjoy that disc. For all others: there is nothing wrong with this disc. It might not be the best sounding SACD, I don't know, but it still is a good one and very nice to have.
