Reviews: Nancy Bryan: Neon Angel

I was looking for new female vocalists on SACD format when I decided to give this title a try. The musicianship and recording quality are excellent. However, Nancy Bryan's vocal style is not what I was hoping for. She's somewhere between a jazzy torch singer and a folk heroine. Her voice is beautiful, but she lacks a personal style that defines her music. This grates on my listening awareness quickly. After a few tracks I find myself wanting to listen to someone else who does what she's doing, only better. Don't think me harsh for saying so, but she needs more passion and a little more development of her own musical style. She sounds like she's phoning it in on this disc. Notable Tracks (Poetic/if not musically memorable): Nobody's Buying, Blame it on the Moon, Neon Angel. If your looking for a quick fling into something new, this disc is for you. If you're seeking a new artist you can really sink your soul into....maybe you should try something else.

Although I don't agree with the previous reviewer who felt Nancy Bryan "phoned it in", I understand personal tastes differ in everything. Although her voice does sound a bit strained on track 6 "Salvation", there are many excellent lyrics and melody on this SACD, especially the first 5 tracks.

According to the APO website Neon Angel was recorded live, direct-to-two-track at Blue Heaven Studios, the converted 77-year-old church in Salina, Kansas. This 13-song, all-acoustic album emphasizes the church's natural acoustics, bringing to life the massive, vaulted ceiling and Nancy on the altar. The sound reproduction throughout this SACD has palpable presence.
