Reviews: Foss: The Prairie - Andrew Clark

Reviews: 1

Review by Stanbury February 9, 2014 (3 of 3 found this review helpful)
Sonics:
This wonderful recording was made in Mechanic's Hall, Worcester, Massachusetts, in 2007 and released in 2008. It is a 53-minute classical choral work and is presented in a nice cardboard three-fold package with 26 pages of notes and the libretto.
The music is generally tonal, for orchestra, chorus, and solo singers. "The Prairie" is a setting of Carl Sandberg's poem about the American prairie and its people. Lucas Foss, who moved to America as a teenager, composed the piece in the early 1940s. It received the New York Music Critics' Circle Award in 1944. Foss went on to an illustrious career and died the year after this SACD was released.
