One of the most recorded and performed works of Alfred Schnittke might be the Konzert für Klavier und Streichorchester from 1979. In this recording this piece gets a philosophical treatment from Ewa Kupiec. She plays the work slower than any other performer I know and in doing so she reveals a few elements that I had not heard before. Also in the other works on this recording she keeps the emotions under control. Supported by Frank Strobel and the RS B orchestra this is a very interesting recording.
Apart from the clavier concerto I found the Concerto from 1960 the most interesting piece of this SACD. For the concerto from 1979 I still prefer the performance with Roland Pöntinen under Lev Markiz, but for the other two works Ewa Kupiec ( and Maria Lettberg) and Frank Strobel are on their own.
The recording: I do not know the recording location but it must be a rather large facility, producing a soft edged and still very focussed and sparkling sound. Reproduction through a 5.0 setup with 5 large speakers gave me the best results. Very well done by the people of Deutschland Radiokultur.
