Reviews: The Rolling Stones: More Hot Rocks (Big Hits and Fazed Cookies)

Like all 22 of the ABKCO recordings, this is well done. All previous Stone CDs should be destroyed. The trouble is deciding which of the 22 albums to buy--especially since many are "greatest hits" type of albums. I think all Stones fans should own High Tide and Green Grass (Big Hits), Let It Bleed, and Beggars Banquet. A fourth pick could be this album, "More Hot Rocks", but I think Through the Past, Darkly (1 SACD), or The Singles Collection (3 SACDs with 57 cuts) are better choices.

I received this recently thanks to a play.com's 2nd hand sale shop. Bargain at UK£10.

The discs are stereo hybrid, so not multi-channel mix. This is fine as this is how the songs were originally recorded.

The instruments are spread nicely between the speakers so there is a feeling of air between the instruments and each instrument is quite distinct.

I know many people have criticised this compilation stating that it is not their best work. However, this appeals to me because if you are only a fan as opposed to a fanatic of their music, this gives a good taste of their talents beyond their more famous works. In particluar, the psychedelic songs liek 2000Years stand out as beacons of creativity, however that may have been induced. ;-)

P.S. In particular, are the natural sounding guitars. Voices sound less natural compared to, e.g. modern recordings, but for the era, these soudn magnificent.
