Reviews: The Rolling Stones: Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits, Vol. 2) (US)

The Stones have never been shy about releasing "greatest hits" type of albums. I believe that High Tide, Green Grass (Big Hits 1) and Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits, Vol. 2) cover most of their early and middle period hits. This hybrid is superior to their recently released "40 Licks" and any of the previous CD versions. You can't miss with any of the ABKCO rereleases and there're easy to spot. They are in a digipak, and not the normal, plastic CD case. As an option, you can buy the AKKCO versions of "Hot Rocks" and "More Hot Rocks" that include about all the cuts in the Big Hits series and more. Then again these are two-CD albums and have a higher price.

This one has a special spot as it was the first Stones album I ever bought many years ago (used with the octagonal cover). This one sounds very, very good. It's nice to have the stereo mix of "Paint It Black" available again (also on the U.S. version of "Aftermath"). The only gripes I have is that "Dandelion" has a narrowed stereo image, "Ruby Tuesday" is not the right tape (an underdub was used. Vocals are supposed to be doubletracked on the chorus), and the end is cut off on "She's A Rainbow" (a manufacturing glitch I suspect). Curious is the choice of the mono mix of "Mother's Little Helper"... Still sounds great though. Aside from those this disc is a worthwile investment (that is if you don't want to spring for "Hot Rocks").
