Reviews: V.S.O.P. The Quintet: Five Stars

Reviews: 1

Review by Barb January 20, 2008 (4 of 4 found this review helpful)
Performance:   Sonics:
H. Hancock p, W. Shorter ts & ss, F. Hubbard tp & flh, R. Carter b, T. Williams ds, CBS 1979.
Two long and two shorter tracks of electrifying modern jazz were issued on that LP then. 33 minutes is bit short for an LP either, but you get powerful and thrilling music with breathtaking solos and interplay and improvisation. For each of the quintet members this V.S.O.P.-period was, to my opinion, a highlight in the career. A band of five stars, no overstatement! Everyone except Carter wrote one of the titles, demonstrating their great skills as composers. Absolutely captivating jazz, although the sound isn`t perfect, by far. The bass and drums are somewhat compressed, lacking colour, dynamics and air, unfortunately.
