Here is a release of the first order uniting the six Concertos for Piano and the Variations without Theme by Venetian composer Gian Francesco Malipiero. Ignored by certain guides and dictionaries, his body of work contains some real beauties. Short in length, these Concertos are veritable colors in movements giving irresistible dazzle to a musical discourse. From the first one dating from 1934 to the last composed in 1964, Malipiero remains a real storyteller of nuances who doesn’t hesitate to play on contrasts following each movement. One thus goes from the adagios’ deep sullen meditation to the allegros’ unbridled virtuosity, from darkness to light, from black to white, resulting in a global vision reflecting the most bewitching of universes. Pianist Sandro Ivo Bartoli measures up to this language and demonstrates an undeniable talent for this music that could be said to hark back to another era. Backed by Michele Carulli’s inspired baton, the pianist takes the score by force as if in a single swoop, and the Italian composer’s music returns to its rightful place. That is, one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Ideally recorded, these SACDs need to be discovered without further ado.
