I thought I would take a punt on this one and it was nothing like I had imagined. This is squarely in the "beeps & boops" camp of 20thC Classical, and I didn't know people still bothered to make music like this. Recording is from a 24/48 source. If anybody enjoys this SACD, please tell me. I have some recordings of my 4 year old wacking the keys on the piano that I think you might like.

Daniel.

I wish I could change the mind of the previous reviewer with words alone. I do sincerely hope that he or she will give the disc another chance. One must also keep in mind that this music was meant to be heard live: while the compositional ideas are carried out with great sensitivity, it is ultimately the sheer joy of multiple pianists at work that make this effort such a pleasure.

Spahlinger enjoys taking unassuming oddly shaped materials, without traditional "musical potential" and subjecting them to extended transformations. The relentless way he executes this in the present pieces both instructive and absorbing. One has to get past the "plink plonk" surface of it, though -- it's not so much a surprise that composers still write this way, but that listeners still have such cognitive/aesthetic problems with it.
