Reviews: Spyro Gyra: In Modern Times

Spyro Gyra are just straight forward contemporary Jazz. Nothing new or innovative on this album, but it is a nice album to listen to or just to play on the background when doing something else. I like this non-intrusive type of Jazz it’s easy on the ears and quite excess able.
On the recording side there is nothing but compliments as far as I’m concerned. This is a sonic masterpiece, one of the best recordings I own.

I have been a Spyro Gyra fan for more than 20 years and they are a fantastic
band who grows on you for every new CD and that they are now doing SACD and in
surround makes the experience even better, as you can hear what a special band
they are. OK, I hear you saying that this is smooth jazz but anybody who
puts them in that "bracket" are missing out on something special.

This hybrid SACD is fantastic on each layer, however the 5.1 surround mix is
truly outstanding and the recording is of a very high fidelity.
Their kind of music is greatly enhanced by the surround mix and gives oodles
of space to every of the top-class performers that are together Spyro Gyra.

I highly agree with the other review posted here - this is a sonic master-piece
in the 5.1 mix.

Listen carefully to each track and you will find what makes Spyro Gyra special,
a highly crafted blend of jazz, latin, rock and blues with Jay Beckenstein's
roaring sax in the foreground.

Highly recommended!

Spyro's initial SACD outing on Heads Up is a keeper. Not as up tempo but every bit as smooth as Original Cinema. Excellent 5.1 mix. Another argument for MCH SACD. If you like smooth jazz with a beat and some bop this is it. In heavy rotation with Original Cinema.

This is my favorite of Spyro Gyra's first 3 Heads Up releases. Although it struck me that Spyro Gyra is more of a back-up band for the group's saxophone player, they do make nice music--if you happen to like smooth jazz. One of the best "pure dsd" recordings in my collection.

Great sounding MC smooth n funky jazz album. This one is a winner one of the most engaging and best sounding jazz albums in my extensive SACD collection. The mix is aggressive, but the lead instrusment is always/usually presented front and center. This makes for very enjoyable, relaxing and yet engaging listen. And did I mention the sonics are as good as it gets? Get it!
