This is a glorious recording. Mozart Duos for violin and viola are - even among Mozart lovers - not very well known. Undeservedly so. In this masterworks Mozart achieves the nearly unthinkable: to extract from two instruments that are even relatively close in register the ipression of a much bigger ensemble playing. Both Tabea Zimmermann and Antje Weithaas's playing is wonderfully alive and full of breath, the phrasing and dynamics very carefully chosen to illuminate this clever dialoges between the two instrumens. They achieve weaving a colourful carpet where textures and motives can be followed but still merge into a meaningful whole.
Both play on relatively new instruments that have a rich, warm and yet brilliant sound.
The duo by Louis Spohr was a real discovery for me. I wish, both musicians would continue their cooperation - with such extraordinary results.
