Reviews: Haydn: Symphony No. 85, Schumann: Symphony No. 4 - Iimori

Performance:   Sonics:
I just received this recording from Japan. While anything from Haydn and Schumann on SACD is welcome, this recording unfortunately fails to meet the most modest expectations. The performances can only be described as pedestrian and lacklustre. The conductor does not really know what to do with this music, he fails to shed light on the textures (especially in Schumann's Fourth Symphony). He is certainly not helped by the dry and constricted acoustics. The Haydn symphony ("La Reine") lacks charm while the Schumann is largely devoid of inner tension. The worst aspect is the lack of transparency, which means that the horns and trombones are barely audible even when they should sound jubilant or triumphant. I listened to this recording in multi-channel, but did not notice any real sense of space. Fortunately, most other recordings featuring Japanese orchestras and conductors are much better.
