Reviews: Dancing Bach - Stockholm Baroque Orchestra

I am going to offer a different review of this SACD. First, as a Proprius SACD, I would expect consistently better sound from such a famous label. It is not here, sadly.

The sound is pretty close and sometimes VERY dry sounding. I do not mind close miked recordings as long as I can still get a sense of space or the hall. The opening Bach Suite sounds like it was recorded in a small room...way too small. I have two other superb SACDs of the Bach Suites (Telarc and BIS) so this opening Stockholm performances, while acceptable, comes in a very distant 3rd.

The various solo tracks also sound dry and close as well as offering barely exciting playing....not really all that fun to listen to. The solo violin selections, like the opening suite, comes in at a distant third compared to my Pentatone SACD with Julia Fischer and a stunning rbcd of Helen Schmitt (on Alpha Productions). Are the soloists trying to be academic, as opposed to having fun like a tile of Dancing Bach would suggest?? I have to wonder

The final suite, like the opening suite, sounds a wee bit better but not much. Also, the performance, while competent, comes in behind my two SACD of the suites.

I find this to be a rather disappointing SACD from a label that I love with a passion. I am not sure who or what this recording serves: there are MANY better recordings of Bach out there,so it makes it VERY difficult to justify the high price of this SACD. Bach's music should illicit a smile, not the near cerebral academic feeling that we have here. After all, is the title not Dancing Bach??

This recording is going back to my store for a trade credit.

Cheers,
