E. Higgins p, J. Leonhart b, J. Ascione dr, Venus 2001. First of all, the sound here is breathtaking. Every nuance of the instruments can be heard and this is one of the reasons why this disc is so much fun. The second reason is the old fashioned material of standards that is played and the third reason is the old fashioned way of playing and interpretation, no surprises, no modernisms, just the songs and three masters of their instruments. When do you have the opinion to hear that stuff with absolute top sound? Whenever I am in the mood for an old fashioned piano trio, I play Eddie Higgins on Venus – and smile.
