Performance:   Sonics:
This is a serious Beethoven cycle and probably best of the several recorded by Japan's pioneering conductor on the occasion of his eightieth birthday. The acoustically excellent Suntory Hall had opened in Tokyo only a few years earlier. This cycle appeared on LDC (Pioneer of Japan) laserdisc soon thereafter, and now has appeared on SACD in similar, that is to say, very good two-channel sound. The performances can be soporific in places, but catch fire in others, and are very enjoyable overall. The laserdisc release is to be preferred, since the picture enhances the sense of occasion, but the SACD stands well on its own. Performance dates: 1988-12-15 Ninth, 1989-2-5 First and Third, 1989-3-11 Second and Seventh, 1989-4-6 Fourth and Sixth, 1989-5-15 Eighth and Fifth.
