FABULOUS 10 STARS I have previously revied 5 stars for both the previous issues in this series (one was deleted?) In some ways this is the best yet.If you imagine the 20 odd minutes Overture/Tone Poem to be a similair orchestral extravaganza similair but better to Suk Novak or Zemlinsky with gorgeous string writing then you get the picture .
This is followed by a Very Big and loud Symphony which last 44 odd minues and encompasses the world of Richard Strauss Wagner Bruckner (and a reference to Shostakovitch)with a Mendlessohn Reformation movement followed by Mahler and a Beethovenian final few chords in what could be described as and orgy of symphonic romanticism.I may even have missed a few..The very large Swiss orchestra and the conducter carry this off effortlessly and whilst some will laugh at the acknowledged cribs from some of the the other composers this is definitly an Original work.
I would guess this si DSD and unless the Rudi Stefan disc is better then its My record of the Year/sorry sacd......Excellent detailed booklet that helps.....Dave

I bought this on Raffells' recommendation and I'm glad! As the other reviewers have mentioned there are a lot of reminders of other composers' works so I'll put my hat in the ring and give a few.

1st. movement - could be Dvorak's 6 1/2 symphony
2nd. movement - starts off sounding like Bruckner - I was interested to try and find Dave's reference to Shostakovich (especially as this was written six years before Dmitri was born!) then it hit me at around 3'40" of this scherzo - could be a dry run for parts of Shostakovich's 5th.
3rd. movement - starts off sounding like the slow movement from Beethoven's 9th.
4th. movement - could be anything from Brahms

I don't want to disparage the work it is highly enjoyable and well worth listening to!

The sound in MC is excellent. We are close up to the orchestra and apart from a certain level of brightness to the sound it is generally fantastic.
