It's always gratifying to take a chance on an unknown (to me) artist and to be completely blown away! Peter Toth is a 30 year old Hungarian virtuoso who just plays the daylights out of Liszt. He might not have quite the "take no prisoners" style of Cziffra, but he plays with plenty of passion and insight, both of which are missing in many other young pianists. He can easily clarify the busy textures in the B-A-C-H Fantasy and Fugue and create a great sense of mystery and anguish in the disquieting Sinistre - Unstern!.

The format is listed (no pun...) as "Direct Cut Super Audio SACD"--that may or may not be a gimmick, but the result is demonstration-worthy sound. It's crystal clear and rather closely mic'd, but there is plenty of bloom and air around his piano.

Highly recommended.
