What a Bargain!
This is a first rate performance of both the works for piano and of the Miraculous Mandarin. The sound is mostly splendid - there is great bass and percussion is stupendous. The woodwind and brass are well recorded and the strings are never shrill, no annoying high frequency bite. Why four and a half stars for sound? Well the percussion and piano are so good that I felt it would be churlish to take off more than a half star for imaging (the solo piano seems slightly misplaced to the right) and a certain whitishness (lack of orchestral color), but that is only in comparison to the very very best, like my favorite PentaTones, and the Telarc Martinu/Dvorak. Many will NOT notice this whitishness I complain about, or maybe it is more a greyishness??? Anyway at the price I paid for this from Amazon.com, I would have been happy with much less - as I say this is a great bargain and the performances are absolutely top notch!
