Reviews: Debussy: 12 Etudes - Jean-Efflam Bavouzet

Reviews: 1

Review by Fugue January 30, 2013 (3 of 3 found this review helpful)
Performance:   Sonics:
This turned out to be rather pricey ($32 for the disc, $22 shipping from Japan--but it got here in 3 days!), but it is certainly a wonderful recording, and one of the few multi-channel discs from Triton. Those people certainly know how to capture the sound of the piano! The perspective is a little close, but not under the lid, and the rear channels contain only ambient information. The sound is crystal clear. I'm perplexed by the DSD designation when sessions took place in 1996: I don't think DSD recorders were yet available. Regardless, the sound is demonstration worthy.

Bavouzet is a fantastic pianist, with a seemingly endless array of dynamics and colors. The Etudes are extremely demanding, but the music effortlessly falls from his fingers. He plays every piece with exquisite taste and clarity.

I recall hearing RBCDs of the Etudes played by Pollini and Uchida, but neither comes close to the sonic quality nor Bavouzet's characterful playing.
