This recording is Carlos V, Mille Regretz: La Canción del Emperador (The Emperor's Song) by La Capella Reial de Catalunya (The Royal Chapel of Catalunya) and Hespérion XX, conducted by Jordi Savall. The recording is by AliaVox (AVSA 9814). It is a DSD hybrid recording.I must say that I am a fan of Jordi Savall. He is a master of several medieval and rennaissance string instruments as well as a scholar in these two music periods, particularly in Spain, Portugal, and France, although he has recorded several of Johan Sebastian Bach's works as well. He has recorded music of the Sephardic Jews of Spain for those periods, as well as spanish arabic music prior to the reconquest and afterwards. Savall's recordings, whether by AliaVox, Astrée, Ensayo, and other recording companies, are extremely clear and clean, with a high degree of definition and presence, and very well recorded. This recording is no exception, there is a clarity that exceeds, in this case, his other prior redbook CD recordings. Voices are extremely well defined and highly differentiated. Instruments are well placed and when voices and instruments play toghether, they can easily be distinguished. This is a recording that I must admit is not for everybody. If you do not like medieval and rennaissance music, this recording is not for you. The use of period instruments is a most enjoyable feature of Savall's recordings. This recording contains what I consider the best interpretation of Clement Janequin/Tylman Susato's Batalla de Pavia (also known as Pavane Bataille) along with The Philip Jones Brass Ensemble's interpretation on mdern instruments. This recording is a good example of what can be achieved by SACD.
