Reviews: Shirley Kwan: Best Collection

Performance:   Sonics:
If one has never had the chance to listen to Shirley Kwan, then this SACD would be an excellent sampler of her work. While the songs are presented out of chronological order, they showed the artistic growth of a very able vocalist. On soft ballads, Kwan was able to give each a breathy presentation and mold them into her own creation. Same with the bass-heavy pop/R&B tracks, which Kwan stylized with urgent and soulful performances. While in no way is this an audiophile demo disc, the recording is generally good, with tight and extended bass. The airy separation in the midrange and higher frequencies gave the music and Kwan's vocals room to expand beyond the perceived edges of the soundstage. The sonic quality of this SACD is slightly above the best of Kwan's music on CD. The SACD compilation doesn't duplicate any of the tracks on Kwan's landmark "EX, All Time Favourites" album, which is also available on SACD. Certainly one of the few bright spots in recent Hong Kong pop music, I highly recommend this SACD.
