Performance:   Sonics:
I'm very glad that I did end up getting this disc. I heard the Harmonia Mundi recording of the Brahms requiem and just couldn't get into it all that much. I appreciated the high resolution surround sound, but didn't care for the performance at all. It felt very wanting to me.

In any case, this performance is magical. I find the attention to text, particularly by the chorus to be exactly what I was wanting from the other recording. The soloists are outstanding and there are moments. Boy, are there moments! My favorite was in the "Wie Lieblich sind deine Wohnungen" when the melody and text transitions to "Die loben dich immerdar." This is just an example.

The recording quality is OK. There was certainly audible hiss and I felt that some of the textures weren't particularly well defined particularly in the bass orchestral and choral voices. It just got TOO thick it seemed occasionally, particlarly at climaxes. Nonetheless, if you love this work as much as I do, this is worth getting, but I wouldn't recommend it as an SACD demo disc or anything of the like.
