A fascinating and now increasingly rare release, the kind I really wish we had more of: an original, hi-resolution multichannel jazz recording with a great acoustic and, more importantly, one of the towering giants of jazz to lead the proceedings. After looking for a while, I just obtained a copy, and can provide a couple of details. First, this is a pure DSD recording (dsd post-processing as well, per info on the back cover), and what must be one of the earliest Polyhymnia DSD multichannel projects. It is recorded with a very vivid, spacious acoustic with excellent separation of lead instruments (alto sax, flute, guitar), very present but not overly booming acoustic bass, and (usually a risky proposition in jazz) a well-integrated string quartet to augment the ensemble sound. The rear channels provide mostly ambiance, but there is no mistaking the overall effect for a mere stereo recording. The compositions themselves are immediately recognizable Konitz brand of cerebral cool, whether original themes or a couple of standards (Stardust, Darn That Dream), catching the master in good spirits and sounding, well, ageless.
