Performance: Sonics:
Beautiful spacious stereo recording (no surround) with Boulez and New York Philharmonic. Good balance and spectrum create excellent atmosphere.
Relatively large orchestra with no authentic instruments and tempi quite slow now and then (no surprise since it was recorded in the seventies). A real joy for trumpet fans (lots of ornaments added).
Sometimes slight timing issue between instruments: French Horns in lower register sometimes lag slightly behind in track 5. In the same track also violas not always convincing or in tune.
If you like recordings with modern instruments this is definitely not a waste of money.
Fans of authentic instruments should continue looking. For example future SACD releases of Pinnock or Gardiner or maybe the Martin Pearlman recording reviewed elsewhere on this site (I haven't heard this one myself though).
