Performance: Sonics: |
The experience of hearing Ashkenazy perform ‘Ein Heldenleben’ with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in the 1980’s has forever spoiled me, I am afraid. Neither does it help that Ashkenazy recorded the same work with the superb Cleveland Orchestra for Decca. Make no mistake, this is a fine performance – excellent if you want to hear Strauss in DSD – and Miroslav Vlimec is an excellent violin soloist. The remaining music for brass is certainly spectacular and figures but seldom on recordings.
