I bought this on a whim basically for the sextet which I saw performed live in LAs Disney Hall and wanted a disc for memories. This version with additional strings really does fit that bill. Previously I had struggled with the main work "Le Bourgeois" and I hadnt realized the Duet was an orchestral work .Not really being a Jarvi fan on some of his other discs I hadnt considered this disc as even half interesting. Wow was I wrong. This is better than I think Castors review gives credit. For once I actually started reading the liner notes to find out what and why I had been missing. A whos who and where did that theme originally come from. In stereo its as good as any of the other Pentatones. There are some I consider poor (Gershwin) but this even challenges the Tchaikovsky/Stravinsky disc. Now I am totally tuned in to these works of one of my favourite composers. Dont be put off by these works as they are definitely top notch.Playing is as well. Now Im only sorry the Violin Concerto hasnt been done by this crowd,I would love Pentaman to correct me on this.. note I do have the versions on vinyl of all Strauss major works by the artists Castor mentioned. Main reason for posting was to give 5 stars to help correct Castors understatement.Buy and enjoy.
