As per De Selby's review, another quality album from eighty-eight with it's beautiful mini-LP case and exquisite sleeve ...oozes with quality. A relative unknown, Lady Kim has her own style in presenting these standards, albeit IMHO, with more passion and style suited to her voice. While not without flaws (her vocal range sometimes failed her) I think her strengths in passionately conveying her songs kept me listening and spinning the discs regularly. Her first track, 'Left Alone' is a beautiful ballad to start with but for track no.4, 'Since I fell for you', fell below (I can't help compare her to) the excellent Al Jarreau's rendition in David Sandborn/Bob James 'Double Vision'.
But the main supprise for me was the price offered by amazon at USD4.99 (RRP: $25.49) which I gleefully checked-out... a real bonus!!

Just wanted to add a comment regarding the multichannel mix: It is the same as the stereo mix except for Kim's voice being in the center and some attenuated stereo mix in the rear.
MCH sound is much better when instruments are spread over the 3 front speakers. Message to Eighty-Eights Records: Please use the potential of MCH fully on future releases. Then these discs will be truely remarkable.

Lady Kim vcl, L. Mayers p, P. Brown b, C. Bean ds, Eighty-Eights 2003.
This is one of the best vocal jazz records I know. Kim`s versions of twelve standards are thrilling, sometimes surprising, always exciting. Most songs are slow melancholic ballads which seem to be Lady Kim`s world. She lays so much soul and emotion into her interpretations so you are captured by each song although been heard so many times before. The band accompanies her perfectly with retention but poignant and with deep feeling. Now and then there is a short exciting solo. If you are in the mood for that, this is a top recommendation. May be there`s the best version of Strange Fruit on this disk since Lady Day`s.
The sound is perfect, rich of colour, very good soundstage and imaging, air for the instruments and the singer to breath, very dynamic, brilliant.
