Reviews: Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 3 - Nakamatsu/Seaman

Reviews: 1

Performance:   Sonics:
Jon Nakamatsu, almost a living legend among piano devotees in the San Francisco Bay Area and winner of the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1997, scores some very high marks for this remarkable recording.

Both the Piano Concerto No. 3 and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Rachmaninov are performed at the very highest levels of technical skills and musicality. The orchestra, under the direction of Christopher Seaman, is also quite competent. At times, I would have liked to hear a little more "drama" within the orchestral renderings - though in a curious way, this restraint also conspires to create some very dramatic moments when the orchestral colors shine through - like the sun breaking through clouds!

Very much worth adding to your collection, and mostly on the strength of Nakamatsu's brilliant playing!
