Reviews: Rachmaninov: The Bells etc - Czech Philharmonic/Ashkenazy

Performance:   Sonics:
Exton OVGY 00005 MCh Rachmaninnov Bell, Russian Songs, Spring. Askenazy/Czech Philharmonic. Single Layer. I am not great fan of these works but the performance and sound are excellent. Chorus is very coherent (Soloists are a bit distant but you cannot have it all). Very, very moving experience. Highly recommended

Performance:   Sonics:
Other recordings at the Rudolfinum – most particularly Sinopoli’s magnificent traversal through Brahms’ complete works for choir and orchestra on Deutsche Grammophon have already exposed the problems of this hall as a recording venue for these particular forces. Here again the choir seems to be placed too far back. Articulation is veiled by reverberance and at the slightest orchestral fortissimo we lose track of the choir altogether. Tomoyoshi Ezaki did not succeed in solving this problem – neither stereo nor multi-channel.

It is a pity because here are some very effective performances with a first-rate choir. Ashkenazy knows his way in this repertoire – and even if he does not eclipse Kitaenko in both the Cantata ‘Spring’ as well as the Choral Symphony ‘The Bells’, the performances of the Three Russian Folksongs and the Six Choruses (accompanied by Ashkenazy at the keyboard) deserve a top recommendation.
