Reviews: Musiq: Soulstar

Performance:   Sonics:
The album opens with the soulfull title track. From there on soulstar oozes out of your speakers with soulfull grooves. Musiq captures your mind with stellar tracks like forthenight, whoknows, missyou, thereason, givemorelove ande the bonus track leave a message. With strong lyrics and interresting chord changes soulstar is bound to please everyone who's into quality soul music.
Soulstar however got's some weaker tracks on it as well. While musiq isn't blessed with a classical trained soul/gospel voice tracks like youloveme, womanopoly and romancipation just seem to be a little too monotonious to keep the tracks interresting. Without tracks like the before mentioned soulstar would have easily gotten a four star rating from me.
The sound of this sa-cd is quite good. I listen to it in the multi-channel mode and to me especially the low range is phenomenal. This however is at the same time the biggest weakness. I got the feeling that this album was approached too much as an hip hop album where a thick bass is one of the main ingredients. With soulstar being a soulalbum however it should be all about the voices. With a lack of depth in the mid- and high range especcialy the background vocals in my opinion tend to get pushed a little too much to the background. But overall the sound of this cd is good and soulstar is a worthwhile addition to your sa-cd record collection.
