Reviews: Stephen Hartke: Tituli - Hilliard Ensemble/Crockett

Performance:   Sonics:
This is just a quick note to let people know that this recording is not for everyone. It is in the "hard" line of ECM's more "radical" contemporary composers and works, and definitely not one of their easiest jazz / world titles.

The music is interesting, but very intellectual and hard to get into (for me). I like a lot of vocal works from the Hillard Ensemble on ECM, but this title is tough. Maybe it will grow on me, but it's definitely not one record I pick up thinking "now I'll just relax to some cool music for the evening".

It has a beautiful stereo soundstage, and interestingly it doesn't sound very good on headphones (the soundstage collapses and you get thrown in the middle of the vocalists).
I wonder why ECM chose this title to publish on SACD, out of their catalog of thousands of titles. All in all, I would say that many ECM CDs have a warmer, more direct sound than this SACD.

My advice: Make sure you listen to a sample before you buy it.

Eric

Not the kind of music I prefer... But some may have better knowledge of what is going on in the music, so I will not rate it for the performance. The sound on ECM CD releases is usually top quality, but this SACD does not get more than 3½ stars from me. Would ECM please be kind to release some jazz-music on SACD.
