This first SACD outing by the Yellowjackets on Heads Up could be called the Yellowjackets meet DMP or the Yellowjackets meet Flim and the BB's. It has a very Flim and the BB's sound or a DMP house sound if you will. Not surprising since Bob Mintzer has spent a lot of time on DMP label projects. The music to me is more of a free form jam than it is a collection of carefully crafted tunes. Each track more similar than it is different. The emphasis here is on horns and keyboards and the ocassional bass excursion. A very modern, slightly electronic sounding disc with the only comparison I can draw again is to Flim and the BB's, which some of their music has to be 20 years old by now so I don't know how modern it may sound. Excellent sonics.
