Performance:   Sonics:
Though not as spectatcular as Marin Marais' or St. Colombe's pieces for viol, Francois Couperin's are nonetheless beautiful pieces, delivered by Mieneke van der Velden with dignity and grace. The recorded sound of the viol and the magnificent sounding harpsichord is captured beautifully in its natural room ambience.
As there are only two suites for viol by the composer, van der Velden chose two concerts from the Concerts Royaux and Noveaux Concerts to fill the CD, and performs one of them on the pardessus de viole - most lovers of French baroque music will be used to hear this on violin or flute. Her control of the delicate instrument is evident, the fragile sound without a second bowed instrument in the bass presents the music as if under magnifying glass.
The high resolution of the DSD technology is perfectly suited for the rich colors of the viol and harpsichord.
