I can't say the performing is first rate (listen to Alessandrini's recording of the Lamento della Nympha), but it's okay. Sound is not bad, ranging from 5 stars on pure instrumentals to three and a half on vocals. Overall, a nice package.

Performance: Sonics: |
This is a beautiful sounding recording, with fine performances of Monteverdi, Della Ciaia, Carissimi and other gems of the early Baroque from the Netherlands Bach Society under the direction of Jos van Veldhoven. In my ears, Channel Classics continues to deliver the most consistantly excellent recordings in the SACD format. ©AE 2004

Recording of 400 year old Italian music, probably an acquired taste for most classical music lovers. I found the Monteverdi piece the best. Several instrumental interludes where you almost feel the instrument (harpsichord, lute) in your room! The recording is almost holographic in its realism. On CD period instruments were generally harsh-sounding but on Channel SACDs they are smooth as silk.
