| This performance emphasizes purcussion, but there are no drum solos (thank goodness). Both the performance and sonics are outstanding. The only negative is that this SACD is only 29 minutes in length and as a result I lowered my rating of the performance. It's difficult for me to accept that its better to have 29 quality minutes of music rather than 20 quality minutes and 20 additional minutes of so-so music.

| I can confirm the excellent performance and sonics of this SACD. Virtuoso cymbal play, perfectly recorded. Fortunately no solo's indeed, but to my opinion –in contrast to the subtitle– Buddy Rich could be somewhat less modest in showing his mastery (although implicitly evident). Markedly too short (only half an hour). Should have been a multichannel production.

Hmmmm. This is a rather unigue sacd title. Originally this was recorded using direct to disc technology. That is....... recorded live in the studio right to the laquer disc itself and no master tapes in between.
So this sacd was done using either a tape copy of the original disc or the disc itself.
In either case what we have here is a very live sounding collection of jazz songs that is rather modern in sound. To those who you who know and agree that Buddy Rich is bar none the greatest jazz drummer in history you may be extremely surprised that he plays very, very reserved on this sacd.
The music is, as I said rather modern in sound and certainly not classic 50's 0r 60's in feel. But it is still enjoyable. It is obvious that Mr. Rich like the guys he was playing with and just wanted to create good music. He allowed himslef to be the time keeper here.
I agree that the direct to disc recording technique sounds extremely "live" in feel this does not mean that its better than master tape. On the contrary.I feel a certain lack of dynamic power here. As if certain aspects of regular sound virtue were sacrificed to acheive the sonic reality on this sacd. Perhaps what I am trying to say is that it lacks depth. Maybe this is the sonic trade-off.
Its still a very excellent sounding sacd. If you purchase this title see if you can detect the different sound. It does have a very live 'you are there' DYNAMIC to it. My only regret is that it would have been awesome to have at least one drum solo by the magnificent Buddy Rich.
Recommended for the pleasure of hearing another version of the recording process.

I'd like to clear up the confusion on this title as to whether it was mastered from disk, a tape copy of the disk, et al. Here is my Twitter conversation with mastering maestro Steve Hoffman on February 18, 2013:
Me: Just listening to your Buddy Rich AF SACD and was wondering if it was mastered from tape or disc. I like it very much!
@SteveHoffmanTV: Mastered from a stereo tape, 15 ips non-Dolby two-track quarter inch.
Me: Hey, thanks for that. The liner notes stating it was originally recorded "direct to disc" caused my (& others') confusion.
@SteveHoffmanTV: All "direct to disks" always had a backup analog tape running. Good thing, isn't it?
