Performance:   Sonics:
Jarvi and his Cincinnati forces give very characterful and spirited performances here: appropriately spiky and punchy in Petrushka (in the sparer 1947 scoring), swaggering and witty in the Scherzo a la Russe, lush and romantic in the Firebird Suite. IMO, this is the most successful of their Telarc recordings to date. No, these performances won't eclipse other favorites of mine (Boulez/NYP in the more luxuriant original 1911 scoring of Petrushka, Colin Davis in the complete Firebird), but I think they can more than hold their own against the modern competition (of which there is plenty!). One little oddity, though: there's a brief pause between the Infernal Dance and the Berceuse (i.e., the usual transitional lead-in to the Berceuse isn't there), which is a bit startling if you're accustomed to hearing it. Telarc's sound is velvety smooth, if just lacking that last bit of openness and transparency. The bass, as usual for this label, makes a huge impact, and will give your system a workout.

Performance:   Sonics:
“While the performance of Petrouchka alone would make this disc a must-own, Jarvi and the CSO continue to dazzle with one of the highest-octane recordings of the Firebird Suite available.” -- Time Out New York

This recording is getting a lot of critical acclaim and it's no wonder! Jarvi once again shows he's a student of Leonard Bernstein by creating a stirring performance. Telarc once again has proved they know how to produce a disk with a 3 dimensional soundstage and power. This recording is emotionally and sonically awesome!
