If "modern" and "20th Century" make you clutch your purse in fear, then "degenerate" probably won't reassure you. But as Dan Davis says in his editorial, these are NEOCLASSICAL works. Russell Lowe Dec 31, 2003) calls this disc "Warm, flowing, fluent, relaxed ". Hmmm, I will have to go back and listen harder, because I hear it as in-your-face confrontational, over-miked. Why is this? Is listening so subjective, that comparing notes is nigh meaningless?

Although orchestral sound and SACD seem made for each other, SACD and chamber music seem to have an uneasy relationship. The smaller chamber target seems harder to hit 'just right'. Praga and the Prazak-Quartet get it exquisitely right with the Schubert Quintet and String Quartet no. 7; the same ... more |

THIS disc has finally won over this Bartok fan to Schubert also, and has put the D.956 up there in my Top Ten Evers. Enough gushing: the Quintet is in the room with me, the strings are on the instruments, and there's rosin on the strings. But not to worry: unlike the Praga/Prazak SACD of Beethoven ... more |
