This album has been a favorite of mine for many years. In fact, it might have been the first CD I ever purchased. However, when I ran home to listen to that CD I was disappointed by the high level of tape hiss on the album.

This recording is very open, wide and deep. Very nice, especially the depth I felt while listening.
The pace is on par with von Karajan - a little slower than some versions, but it savors the details. I most noticed the big drums and their reverberation and how they burst outward and depth-ward. ... more |

This is an absolutely beautiful recording. The dynamic range is unreal and it's easy to hear the sonic location of each instrument. The sound stage is pretty wide and has some really good depth. Great performance by Yo-Yo Ma. Morricone tailors several of his film scores to emphasize Ma's cello. The sound on the SACD layer is very silky and three-dimensional. Norah Jones sings a more bluesy selection of material than I was expecting.
