The RCA Victor Gold Seal RBCD of Reiner's Ravel and Debussy has long been perhaps my favourite Reiner/Chicago disc and I have never understood why it wasn't released in the Living Stereo SACD series. However, here it is at last - or at least part of it - and it sounds wonderful.

I have little to add to the positive reviews for this disc already posted; but I should like to beg anyone who is lucky enough, as I was recently, to find a copy of this at a reasonable price, not to be put off by the negative reviews on here. Anyone who starts this disc with track 1, Laetatus sum, will be hooked; over a bouncing ostinato the solo violins, sackbuts, bassoon and, not least, the virtuoso singers of the King's Consort joyously jazz it up. it is all done with an apparently effortless joi de vivre which is completely ... more |
