What a great album! My first exposure to Dinah Washington was as a teenager after hearing the title cut of this album on the radio. While Dinah never quite earned the level of respect jazz music lovers that Billie, Ella and Sarah had, she is sufficiently talented to rank among these superstars. ... more |

This one is a sonic disappointment of the highest order for me. As reviewer Dinko notes below, this one sounds muffled and indistinct, and is further hampered by its extremely low volume levels. Zoot is in good company here with Joe Pass (g) and Oscar Peterson (p) providing stellar backup to his eloquently laid-back style of playing. The album features 11 of the Gershwin Brothers' most famous tunes, all played fairly straight-forwardly. Enthusiastically recommended for the music.

This album was recorded in April, June and July 1957, but not released until 1961. What is offered here is all that remains of the Monk/Coltrane sessions. I'll second JW's earlier review. The sound on this recording epitomizes the strength of the DSD recording medium. It is more transparent and immediate sounding than most of the other Davis SACDs I've sampled, and each part of the frequency bandwidth is smooth and vivid.
